Charles Thompson Harvey (1829-1912) was a self trained engineer who was renown for designing and building the Sault Sainte Marie (Soo) Canal. Later, he became a pioneer in the development of the world's first elevated railroad line in New York City. This venture, known as the West Side and Yonkers Patent Railway was demonstrated in December 1867 and open for public transit use in July 1868.
